David Savan in 1979 or 1980

David Savan (1916-1992) was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, educated at Harvard, and taught at the University of Toronto for over forty years. The leadership of Savan, together with his senior colleague Thomas Goudge (also recently deceased), ensured that the philosophy department for decades fostered the study of American philosophy and the thought of Charles S. Peirce in particular. In his memory the department has dedicated the David Savan Philosophy Library, which opened September 18th, 1996, and the David Savan Dissertation Prize, which was first awarded in 1996.

Sources about Savan are T. L. Short, "David Savan's Peirce Studies," Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society 22.2 (Spring 1986): 121-124; Calvin G.
