Pragmatism in American Thought
John R. Shook, General Editor
Michael Eldridge, Consulting Editor

“In the English-speaking world in recent years no philosophical outlook has been more vigorously defended and attacked than pragmatism and the forms of naturalism associated with pragmatism. Participants in this debate include scholars from every discipline in the humanities and the social sciences. Regrettably, few of these writers have more than a superficial familiarity with the vast literature on pragmatism published between the Civil War and World War II. Worse, serious misunderstandings of the early literature abound. The Thoemmes program, Pragmatism in American Thought, by making readily available to libraries and individuals the significant early texts, will contribute much to today’s debate and to such debates for many decades to come.”

— Peter H. Hare, State University of New York Distinguished Service Professor
